5th Anniversary Exhibition. Galería Nueva.
This exhibition is an emotional exercise in memory for all those of you who have visited any of the Galería Nueva venues in Madrid. In it you will be able to recognise some of the works that you have seen over the last five years in our spaces thanks to the galleries and institutions that have worked with us.
In January 2020 Galería Nueva opened its doors at 10 Doctor Fourquet Street in Madrid with an exhibition of four African artists (Yola Balanga, Keli-Safia Maksud, Phumulani Ntuli and Hilary Balu Kuyangiko) who had been in residence during 2019 with the Asociación Cultural Atelier Solar. Galería Nueva was created with the idea of offering its space and services to galleries and artistic entities from outside Madrid for exhibitions lasting between two and four weeks. After two more exhibitions organised by the art dealer Nicolas Dewavrin and curated by M. + John Brown Projects, in March of that year Galería Nueva had to close temporarily due to COVID-19. During the months that the shops were able to open their doors, Galería Nueva hosted exhibitions from other latitudes that could not develop their exhibition activity, serving as a showcase for those galleries that were temporarily left without space, such as the Chilean gallery Isabel Croxatto, the Mexican Galería Galería Galería or the English Division of Labour.
In 2022, with the complicity of the collector and artist Alexia Mossai, a second branch of Galería Nueva opens in the district of Las Letras, hosting exhibitions by important galleries such as Espacio Bernal, Pigment (Barcelona), Lariot Collective (London), Luisa Pita (Santiago de Compostela), Arte Periférica (Lisbon) and Valid Foto (Barcelona).
The following year Galería Nueva opened a third venue in Carabanchel, which allows three galleries to be housed simultaneously: two permanent galleries (Tönnheim Gallery and de Filippo Contemporary) and one for temporary galleries. This venue hosts the Obertura fair every November, which brings together 16 national and international contemporary art galleries. On the basement floor there are currently three spaces available to be occupied by three galleries that want to start their activity in Madrid.
In October 2024 we moved our space from Doctor Fourquet to 17 Valencia Street, doubling the exhibition area and allowing Ilgaz Yildiz Gallery to permanently occupy one of the spaces at street level of this new venue.
Internationalisation of Galeria Nueva: Mexico City and London
At the end of 2024 we also opened a space in Mexico City thanks to the collaboration with the businesswoman Letma Félix, director of Galería Nueva Ciudad de México. This space is located in Colonia Roma Norte, very close to other prestigious galleries such as OMR, Travesía Cuatro, Arróniz or Nordenhacke.
From 2025, Galería Nueva will open its London headquarters under the direction of the cultural manager Andrea Herrada, thus expanding the possibilities of internationalisation for Spanish and Latin American galleries, which will be able to approach the London context in this way. Galería Nueva London Bridge will be the name of this project located in an English-style house that allows the works of art to be experienced in a domestic setting.
