My girl. Colectivo Sobremesa.

Sobremesa is a programme of virtual residencies that creates a collaborative space for reflection and collective creation, whose aim is to enrich the imaginary collective, creating a common platform where art, critical thinking and shared action meet to generate new ways of understanding and participating in the world.

The curatorial proposal of Sobremesa arises from the desire to democratise spaces for artistic creation and reflection, promoting an exchange of ideas between people from different disciplines, both within and outside the artistic field. This approach seeks to open the field to voices that, for different reasons, do not always have access to conventional platforms, through an inclusive and plural space.

My girl

‘My girl’ is the result of the first edition of the Sobremesa residency programme. This proposal brings together a group of nine women of different ages, backgrounds and professions to re-interpret and materialise the meaning of being a girl. Through this programme, each resident approaches her childhood from an introspective point of view, where the traces of childhood become starting points to explore and question the memories, emotions and fragmented memories that constitute them.

This project aims to open up a space for reflection to explore how each woman’s childhood has been shaped by different contexts, experiences and social expectations. In My girl, memory becomes a flexible and personal mechanism, in which each participant not only remembers, but also rewrites, re-signifies and reconstructs her own history. This profound process of self-knowledge sometimes becomes a healing act, or an opportunity to confront a painful past.

The exhibition presents diverse interpretations of childhood, offering a unique look at what it means to be a girl. Each piece becomes a personal and collective exploration of memory and identity. Some residents pay homage to the gaps and lacunae of their childhood, while others draw on grandmothers’ stories to reconstruct family memory. It also questions how childhood can be marked by the pressure of binary stereotypes, which assign girls predetermined roles and limit their possibilities for expression. Through objects that evoke lost memories, memories are rewritten with words and music is used as a tool to unfold a range of emotional and sensory landscapes, reflecting the complexity of emotions, thoughts and visions that run through the experience of being a girl.

‘My Girl’ shows that our childhoods do not die; they remain with us, sometimes as a powerful flame, sometimes as a fleeting flash, but always present. Why should we say goodbye to them?

This exhibition is, in essence, a space to rethink childhood from a broad, complex and diverse perspective, where participants can redraw their personal and collective history. ‘My Girl’ is not only a tribute to childhood itself, but also a way to give voice to those experiences that deviate from conventional narratives, allowing each woman, with her own gaze and process, to recognise and celebrate her inner girl, without renouncing her or leaving her behind.

About Colectivo Sobremesa

The format of the ‘sobremesas’ is monthly and is carried out virtually, allowing global participation and meeting without the geographical barriers that usually limit this type of initiative. Each meeting is characterised by a flexible dynamic that can include dialogue and discussion sessions, conversations moderated by special guests, casual chats over a meal, workshops and project presentations, among others. This diversity of formats promotes an exchange of ideas where participants have the opportunity to share their creative processes and enrich the conversation.

In this way, Sobremesa is gradually becoming a living space for artistic exchange and critical reflection that seeks to redefine the present and open paths towards more inclusive, diverse and meaningful futures.

About Galería Nueva CDMX

This exhibition kicks off the programme of this new space that is emerging in Mexico City as a replica of the three that already exist in Madrid (Spain), founded by the curator Daniel Silvo since 2020. This new venue is directed by Letma Félix Flores, entrepreneur and curator of contemporary art. The spirit of Galería Nueva is to provide a temporary space in the city for galleries, foundations, collectives and entities of all kinds that want to approach the Mexican art market and present their exhibition projects. A committee of collectors and curators will review the proposals received and will shape the programme of Galería Nueva CDMX, making room for painting, sculpture, audiovisual, installation, performance and any artistic format and technique, as well as artists of any nationality and origin.
